2021-2022 ESSER III Plan

Poe Middle School

Region 2

Jason Pannutti, Principal

Background: The Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER III) is a federal grant which requires that spending be used in specific areas.  Part of the Fairfax County Public Schools spending plan identifies funding to be used for Unfinished Learning and Student Academic and Social, Emotional, Mental Health (Wellness) Needs.  Schools have been given funding allocations to support the academic and wellness needs of students.  Schools are required to create plans in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Wellness highlighting the strategies they will use to support these areas using their ESSER III funding.  These strategies are shown below.

ESSER III English Language Arts Strategies

Outcome: Ensure students are making sufficient progress to be on grade level in English Language Arts.

Strategy 1:  Reteach Essential English Language Arts (ELA) skills through an intervention period that is embedded in the school day (2 or 3 times per week; 45 minute sessions; 7-week period).

Strategy 2: The MTSS will progress monitor intervention data and make instructional decisions for students.

Strategy 3:  Leveled Literacy Intervention  for decoding, fluency, comprehension, and writing skills development.

Strategy 4: Planning for small group targeted intervention.

ESSER III Mathematics Strategies

Outcome: Ensure students are making sufficient progress to be on grade level in Mathematics.

Strategy 1: Reteach Essential math skills through an intervention period that is embedded in the school day (2 or 3 times per week; 45 minute sessions; 7-week period).

Strategy 2:  Plan lessons that target the skills students need to be successful in math classes. Students receive  targeted instruction in those skills. Teachers designed lessons using the FCPS Mathematics  program of studies’ as their resource to help guide the planning of their instruction.

ESSER III Wellness Strategies

Outcome: Ensure students feel safe, included, and supported in the school environment.

Strategy 1: Strengthen Tier 1 Evidence Based Strategies

Strategy 2:  Implement Weekly Social and Emotional Learning Lessons

Strategy 3: Targeted Student Support

Strategy 4: Increase students’ connectedness and sense of well-being.

Background: All Fairfax County schools are also required to complete an access and opportunity goal as part of their School Innovation and Improvement Plan (SIIP) and can also capture additional goals.  These are shown below.

Access & Opportunity End of Year SMARTR Outcome

Goal: By June 2022, 100% of our Poe Students will choose “agree” on a student climate survey to the questions: “I feel safe at school”, “I feel respected at school”, “I feel included in my school community”. This SMARTR goal was created to ensure that Poe students' feel welcomed, comfortable, safe, and respected at our school.  The mental wellness of our students is paramount, and due to the pandemic and the struggles students have experienced over the last two years, the data from the survey will demonstrate whether or not Poe has reached the SMARTR goal.

Strategy 1: Implement Family and Student Engagement partnership opportunities to cultivate family and school connectedness.

Strategy 2: Develop and implement school-wide student behavior expectations focused on restorative practices.

Strategy 3: Prioritize relationships between students and teachers through Advisory.

Strategy 4: Utilize culturally responsive instructional strategies to affirm identities.
